Though Inter-Continental also operates sumptuous establishments on such beaten paths as Geneva, Dublin, Frankfurt and Vienna, most of its 36 hotels have altered the skyline of such places as Abidjan, Amman, Bali, Bangkok, Djakarta, Monrovia and Dacca. The formula-an oasis in the ham-and-egg-less desert-has proved so successful that last week workmen were busy with major expansions of six InterContinental hotels. Completely new additions to the chain were rising at Lahore and Rawalpindi in Pakistan, Nicaragua's Managua, and Auckland, N.Z. This month the company will break ground in Manila, and architects are drafting...
...good breeding, none can outclass the Metropolitan Opera Club. Nicknamed "The Penguins," because its members wear white tie and tails, the club is the last vestige of the courtly pomp and pageantry that once attended grand opera. Last week members sipped champagne and dined beneath crystal chandeliers in their sumptuous clubroom in the new Met, then adjourned to their two tiers of box seats to hear Die Meistersinger. It is a weekly ritual that has been going on no matter what the opera for 73 years, but now, in the name of progress, tradition is bending...
BIRDS OF THE NORTHERN FOREST, paintings by J. F. Lansdowne, text by John A. Livingston. 247 pages. Houghton Mifflin. $20. Paintings of birds to rank with those of Gould and Audubon distinguish this sumptuous volume devoted to Canadian birds, most of them, of course, with dual citizenship in the U.S. Lansdowne is an artist who gratifies the ornithologist with his precision and detail, and he charms the print fancier with his grace and delicacy of tone. Worth the price of 30 bushels of sunflower seeds...
WAGNER: DIE WALKURE (5 LPs; London). Following close upon last year's triumphant Gotterdammerung, London completes its new recordings of the complete Ring cycle with a wonderful Walkure. Conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, Georg Solti again heaps high all the sumptuous glories of the Wagnerian orchestra, at the same time charging every passage of Wotan's family fracas with drama. The lush and beautiful singing is alive with emotion, the stars being an international assemblage of accomplished artists: Birgit Nilsson as Briinnhilde, Regine Crespin as Sieglinde, Christa Ludwig as Fricka, and Hans Hotter as Wotan. Not quite so great...
Hotel Paradiso. Putting the right people in the wrong beds is the principal preoccupation of French farce, but this sumptuous period piece gets rather confused about the sleeping arrangements: it's the moviegoer who does most of the yawning...
