Aside from its fastidiously groomed regulars, who flock daily to Bergdorf Goodman's seventh-floor aerie, much of that glamour is derived from its sumptuous interiors. The walls are adorned with dazzling de Gournay chinoiserie wallpaper. The luxe furniture includes reproductions of 18th century egg-shaped canopy chairs, while the color palette spans robin's egg blue, chartreuse and gilt. His performance of the Adagio movement from Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 23” was novel in all the best ways. Foregoing the sumptuous melodic slush favored by many pianists who look for any available opportunity to jerk Romantic tears from a sympathetic audience, Berkowitz crafted lines that were detached, but wrenchingly so. ...show's meaning. Seeing the show for the first time is like falling in love with a beautiful person who speaks another language: you miss the shadings but get the passion. Guiding your emotions is Ren? Dup?r?'s rich, throbbingly romantic music - easily the year's best new score. Sumptuous music, an engaging story, jaw-dropping visual grandeur... KA is what I said: great theater...
