...former princely state of Gwalior, a scion of maharajahs, Madhavrao Scindia, 39, the local candidate for Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's Congress (I) Party, courted voters after descending each day from his sumptuous palace amid a swirl of liveried servants; just as faithfully every morning, his mother regally journeyed from the palace to campaign for an opposition party. In the southern town of Madhuranthakam, a disgruntled politician, who had been refused a place on the party ticket by the Prime Minister, plunged the local election into chaos by persuading 84 people to join him in running as independent candidates. ...these busy architects, who often compete against one another for seven-figure commissions, get together on tableware? Easily, say Nan Swid and Addie Powell. Dedicated readers will learn that Renoir's long life was not as serene and untroubled as the joy that shines from his canvases might suggest...

...costumes, worth the price of admission in themselves, are a cross between commedia dell'arte and Oriental styles, corresponding to no known time or place. Some, like Tartaglia's shimmering, black, bat-winged cape, are sumptuous and frightening. Truffaldino, the simple-minded bird catcher, on the other hand, looks hilariously like Big Bird with a truffle-shaped head. The characters' exotic masks, with their fixed and staring eyes, give even the humans in King Stag an entrancing and surreal beauty. When the characters speak from bodies not their own, as when Tartaglia inhabits Deramo's body to deceive Angela...
