Beyond that, there are the Nick Nolte and the Robert Shaw problems to deal with. The former, playing Bisset's lover, is one of those sun-kissed California lads, very cool and laid-back in the current West Coast fashion among males. He made his mark in TV's Rich Man, Poor Man, and there is obviously a feeling abroad that he can be made into a sort of discount Robert Redford...

There may be, as the Book of Ecclesiastes says, "no new thing under the Sun," but there is definitely something new way out beyond it. Astronomers know that stars, and possibly entire solar systems, are constantly being born in the womblike gas clouds of interstellar space (TIME cover, Dec. 27). Now, they may have a chance to observe a delivery. Scientists from the University of Arizona and NASA'S Ames Research Center at Mountain View, Calif., announced last week that they have identified a discshaped object in the constellation Cygnus that is not only an evolving star, but could...

...telescope at Arizona's Steward Observatory and the 91-cm. (36 in.) infra-red scope in Ames' Kuiper Airborne Observatory, realized how unusual it was. In simultaneous observations, the scientists discovered that the star, already ten times the size and 30 times the mass of the sun, was surrounded by a great glowing disc some 224 million km. (approximately 140 million miles) in diameter...

OZONE DESTRUCTION. The layer of ozone, a highly reactive form of oxygen, in the stratosphere absorbs much of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, protecting humans and other organisms from an overdose of these solar rays. But the layer is fragile, susceptible to a number of chemicals that convert ozone back into ordinary oxygen. According to the U.N. report, the widespread use of fluorocarbons as propellants for aerosol spray deodorants and other products may have already depleted the ozone layer by 1%, and could cut it by as much as 10% by the year 2050 unless the use of fluorocarbons...

...veteran who employs 30 Vietvets as salesmen, Byers in the past four years has sold more houses than any other real estate agent in the county. A bachelor, he inhabits some fancy real estate of his own in Newport Beach and several days a month jets off to wherever sun or snow may beckon. Byers' secret has been to specialize in selling fellow veterans relatively inexpensive homes with VA-guaranteed loans. Says he: "We sell an average of 100 houses a month in the $60,000-and-below market. We make money on volume, not high-priced individual units...
