...huge Hercules aircraft took off from Quonset Point, R.I., and reached the U.S. staging base at Christchurch, New Zealand, the following day. Flights from Christchurch to McMurdo have been made with almost monoto nous regularity for the past eight years -but only in the sunlit months from December to March. During April the light shrinks to a thin orange streamer and then flickers out, to be succeeded by continuous night and a winter season of swift blizzards and howling gales with temperatures as low as -127° F. Not until August does the sun return...

...PURITANI (3 LPs; London) is the last and loveliest of Bellini's operas, a story about the Roundheads and the Stuarts in the days of Cromwell incongruously drenched in Italian melody and sunlit harmony. Only singers skilled in bel canto, such as Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas, dare try it. In the new recording, Sutherland is the demented Elvira, and when she sings Vien, diletto in a deluge of perfectly matched and sparkling runs and trills, she embellishes even the embellishments. Knife in the Water begins against a feebly sunlit landscape in the lake region of Poland. A bored husband and wife are driving out for a day's sailing. They stop to pick up a brash young hitchhiker, whose insolence catalyzes their own hostility-and this three-cornered thriller quickly generates force. By the time they reach pierside, the two males are abristle, eying each other like cocks in a pit. "You're no match for me, but come aboard," taunts the older man. The boy accepts: "Ah, you want to carry on the game...

There could surely be no water waves, since the temperature of Mercury on its permanently sunlit side is 1,800° F. The roughness of Mercury could be due to any irregularities more than a foot or so in width-large enough to scatter the 5-in. waves of the Goldstone transmitter. If Mercury's surface were smoother than that, the radar waves would be reflected from a small highlight in the center of the disk. Instead, the planet is radar bright all over, which means that its whole surface must have irregularities that bounce radar waves back toward...
