Grim prospect. All summer, the fan looked about for reassurance. There were familiar sounds all around. Van Morrison, a favorite since the early '60s, released yet another album, Avalon Sunset, a lyrical, ruminative shard of spirituality that he refused to push or publicize. The Grateful Dead persisted, a whole band of Peter Pans camping out in a hippie never-never land. The Bee Gees returned; so did the Jefferson Airplane and the Doobie Brothers. These weren't revivals; they were exhumations...
...christened and so stocked, the Oliver Peoples shop opened on a tony patch of Sunset Boulevard, and has rapidly become the hippest name in eyewear. Selling a combination of Peoples antiques (at an average of $200 a pop), timely improvisations on his vintage designs ($90 to $225) and original concoctions of their own (all manufactured by Optec Japan), the Peoples people are scoring an eye-popping success. They have sold some 110,000 frames through a wholesale operation and opened accounts in chichi retail outlets from Europe to Japan to Australia. Says Richard Morgenthal, president of New York City...
...weakest part of Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. Major contributions were surely made by the composer and by director Trevor Nunn, and the storytelling is also enhanced by Maria Bjornson's dreamlike designs. They shift fluidly from a naturalistic mansion courtyard to a mountain range at sunset conveyed by just a jagged line of reddish purple across a backdrop of black. The performers all act as ably as they sing, notably Michael Ball as the doomed boyish hero who ages into embittered manhood, Ann Crumb as the woman with whom everyone falls in love but who loves herself...
...accept the film, though, one must first understand its point of view, and that is maddeningly difficult. All we know for certain is that Do the Right Thing is not naturalistic. Golden sunset hues swathe the street at 10 in the morning. The color scheme is chicly coordinated, as if Jerome Robbins' Sharks and Jets were about to dance onscreen; the picture could be called Bed-Stuy Story, full of Officer Krupkes and kindly store owners. At first, the dilemmas are predictably pastel too: populist cliches brought to life by an attractive cast. Even the racial epithets have a jaunty...
...love story was to have no sunset. Only after their marriage did Violeta understand fully her husband's commitment to ending the Somoza dynasty, which had ruled since 1936. Before the Somozas came to power, four Chamorros had been President of Nicaragua. Pedro Joaquin's editorials left no doubt that he hoped someday to continue the family tradition. His political outspokenness got him thrown into jail four times, but each time he emerged with even greater popularity, until he became a symbol of the mounting opposition to the dictator. On Jan. 10, 1978, as he drove to work...
