...comic potential in Jonathan Lemkin's black and white, three-dimensional wood-carving set, with three great, storybook houses rising out of a gorgeously detailed back-drop. But Alex Begin's harsh, bright lighting makes the set seem stark, even Beckettian. It comes to life only during an imaginative sunset-to-sunrise sequence in the second act, acquiring magical, mysterious depth. Valerie Hobb's colorful, deliriously clashing costumes also don't take the light particularly well--they look as if they could use a sprinkle of MSG to bring them out. But they are stuffed with modest, witty flourishes...

...brief word on Spanish customs. It may seem astounding to Americans--given the tropical heat that descends on the peninsula at ten in the morning and lasts past sunset--that shorts on women cause men to leer and catcall and local women to dower with contempt and derision. This is uncomfortably true: wearing shorts verges on the suicidal the farther South you go. Spaniards themselves tend, as a rule, to dress in colors that vary little from the funerial: style and colorful dress are equated with loose morals and looser living habits...

At sunset, the women return to Cameroon, carrying bundles of clothing recovered from their abandoned homes. Relief workers say that the women fear being robbed and raped by Libyan soldiers who patrol N'Djamena at night...

...marked taste for indirect and elliptical art, has also included an interesting painter from New Orleans, Jim Richard, 37. Richard's deadpan views of Southern suburbia do not justify Frank's claim that they possess "the most astoundingly lambent light this side of a Caspar David Friedrich sunset." That must be the most astoundingly nutty thing written by a talented critic about a talented artist so far this winter. But they do have a weird, banal intensity, especially in Viewing the Sculpture, 1980, where a number of chairs in a tract-home parlor survey a pressed-steel hardware...

...pall of fear is lifting in Turkey. Restaurants that had closed for lack of clientele have been reopening. Families that once locked themselves in at sunset are venturing out to evening bazaars. Students have stopped shooting and returned to studying. Just three months after General Kenan Evren and his military junta overthrew Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel's paralyzed government, the country's notorious terrorism is on the wane and the crippled economy is on the mend...
