Baroque trumpet and organ, produce an incredibly powerful sound together. Given a well-selected program and a competent performance, the result is often quite thrilling. Add to this the specific artistry of an Edward Tarr--considered by many the finest baroque trumpeter today--and the combination should be superb. But last Wednesday's recital at Memorial Church was a disappointment. Garcia's performance on this album is truly superb, as it has seen on every other Dead recording. His playing seems to be more mature, with fewer of the acid pyrotechnics and a much more reserved, flowing style. He is beginning to show the almost lyrical influence of the pedal steel guitar, especially on the country numbers that the Dead...
...acting is superb, particularly Innes-Fergus McDade as Mrs. Venable, the obsessed, patrician Southern matron, Jeannie Lindheim, as Catherine, is slightly less effective, perhaps because her character is less clearly drawn. The best of the minor characters is Mary Elizabeth Leach as Catherine's mother, a fluttery, weakminded old lady who only wants to keep things calm so that she can get part of Sebastian's estate...
...Feeling" is the first song on the album, and represents Beck's writing at its best. It's a strong driving number, arranged in such a way that all of the instruments can be distinctly heard. Beck's guitar work, as always, is superb. Punctuating here, leading there, always coaxing and teasing until it rushes on in a burst of energy. "Situation" and "Short Business" are also on Side One. They are both fast-paced songs, but noteworthy only for Beck's guitar work...
