Bunuel, who at that point had only made his surrealist shorts and a superb documentary on Spanish peasants called Land Without Bread, went into exile in Mexico. ...Abmaphid. The abundance of humor provides constant comic relief. It has an enormously supple range, by turns sophisticated, acid, intellectual, putdown, cynical, broad, black and even sick. The two leads are superb. Dewhurst does not need to bray "I am the Earth Mother." We know it on sight. We sense that a Samson might have won her respect but never an "Abmaphid ... A.B. ... M.A. ... ...Connery are imperfectly matched-silk and chain mail-which means, of course, that they are superb together. It is tempting but unfair to go into details of their last scene. Let it just be said that it is one of the most unconscionable assaults on the tear ducts since . . . well, since long before Hepburn's temporary retirement...
