"Raised in Captivity" is profound, surprisingly modern, witty, and unique. The cast in the current Loeb Mainstage production is superb, delivering Nicky Silver's quick wit and capturing the emotion and confusion that the play tries to achieve. It is able to keep the play from becoming too bizarre or weighed down by its heavy themes...

...story is told through scenes of song and dialogue, interrupted by dances of various lengths. Although many of the dancers themselves are superb and a few of the dances, such as "Tornado"--in which the storm is portrayed by three pirouetting dancers, who bring Dorothy into their rhythmic pattern when she is sucked into the tempest--are original and engaging, much of the choreography eventually becomes dry and is not capable of sustaining energy between the scenes of dialogue. During the first act the disturbance created by the constant dance numbers severely breaks up and slows down the action...

Craig Hanson, Paul Lincoln (Bank-Account Bill), Bob Grady, Kirk Bangstad, and the women's chorus were all quite strong, but the men's chorus left something to be desired. The orchestra was superb and almost never overwhelmed the singers on stage. Under the skillful baton of music director Steven Huang '95, they moved effortlessly through a constant barrage of varied tempi and wildly disparate musical styles...
