...same traits of character which have given his younger brother so prominent and honorable a position. In the opening chapters of the book, Mr. Hughes, with characteristic modesty, recounts many of his brother's exploits at home and at Rugby, always ascribing to him a courage and intellect far superior to his own. It might be supposed that much of this praise was due to the affectionate admiration of a brother, but the simplicity and earnestness with which it is bestowed compel us to believe that it is deserved. ...love the Classics. I venerate the ancients, because their knowledge of nature was superior to ours, their science more advanced, their ideas of the human relations broader and purer, and, finally, because my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather venerated and studied them before me. "With a loud voice I shall respond to every ruthless attempt to tear from our college course the study of their language: Procul, O procul este, profani...
Boston Theatre. The return of Miss Maggie Mitchell, one of Boston's favorites, has been received with crowded and enthusiastic houses. Upon so much of this business we have nothing to say. But about two months ago there appeared an "Advertiser's Companion" to the Tabular View that was issued last October. It is not possible that men would have invested...
...need not specify - all know whom I mean - that friendly young man whose visits are as regular as the flow and ebb of the sea; that congenial soul who, on finding our oak sported, evinces his superior knowledge of college customs by treating us to the soul-soothing sound of the devil's tattoo beaten upon our door in a manner truly vigorous, giving vent at the same time to expressions of mistrust as to our being out, and whose incredulous phiz we finally see peering at us through the ventilator. In what a pleasant frame of mind...
