...week was so beautiful, so relaxing and so satisfying, how could I still be so against taking away the food fact counts in the dining hall? The opponents to placards take a qualitative approach to food that works beautifully in Barcelona. The nutrition facts on every item in the supermarket (except the new-wave diet juices) were rarely prominent and always limited, and the obesity rate there is an impressive 11% compared to the United States’ 31%. (Boston, for a more apropos comparison, is just shy of 14%.) But the U.S. is a different place. In Barcelona...
...There have been no reports of protests, but consumers are testy. On Jan. 29, Zhang Liying, a 36-year-old mother of one, shuffled into the supermarket near her apartment outside Shanghai, knocked snow off of her boots and started shopping for dinner. Bundled up against bitter temperatures, she had ridden her scooter to the store and was "frozen now," she said. I realized that I was in one of a few strange, Twilight Zone-like patches in the world: a place where Boston and New York sports fans could co-exist in peace. Certainly, Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup lacks some of the Boston-New York bite to which sports fans have become so accustomed. What pushes this game past...
...Distavores I'm sorry that the local-food movement is cramping Joel Stein's style [Jan. 21]. But just because 100 miles (160 km) has been used as an arbitrary procurement distance for p.r. purposes doesn't mean that all people who try to eat locally walk around the supermarket with a GPS unit. I still enjoy bananas and coffee, and I have no problem drinking beer that comes from - gasp! - California. But for me and many others, the point of eating locally is to become more familiar with our food. It's nice to hear a farmer say that...
