...That kind of thinking was selling big last week in Cannes, where American television studios were testing their wares on thousands of buyers and foreign distributors who gathered for Mipcom. Participation in the annual supermarket sweep of TV buying was up to 12,500 registered participants, 10% more than last year and higher than it's been since 1985. On the heels of international hits like 24, Lost and CSI, American sellers not only wowed foreign buyers with a new slate of dramas but were commanding as much as $1.5 million an episode for a show like Desperate Housewives...
They may have seemed vaguely exotic a decade ago, but these days we take for granted the presence of Chilean and Argentine wines on supermarket shelves. Can any other South American wine-producing country achieve that level of international acceptance, and if so, which one? The answer may be Uruguay. The reason is that the country has a niche virtually all to itself, and that's Tannat?an obscure grape originally grown in southwestern France, and brought to Uruguay in 1870. Whole Foods, Safeway and Wild Oats have voluntarily posted government warnings about mercury in fish. But other companies should follow suit and let customers know which fish contain high levels of mercury. Few people are aware that chlorine plants emit more mercury on average than coal-fired power plants. Technology to eliminate mercury in chlorine processes is already used by 90% of the industry, but six plants still use and release mercury unnecessarily. Mercury release could be cut substantially if they...
Obsessive celeb watchers can already buy Heidi Klum's diaper bag and Shaq's car stereo. So we guess it was just a matter of time before more prosaic star acquisitions--like produce and junk food--became public. The online supermarket Fresh Direct is posting the shopping lists of some of its famous customers, including director SPIKE LEE (Lactaid milk, Pringles, Granny Smith apples), Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon (truffle oil, Pop-Tarts, swordfish steaks) and model Paulina Porizkova (rotisserie chicken, Milano cookies, Jarlsberg cheese). The lists are not comprehensive; no toiletries, alas. Plus, the site does...
