Caldwell is willing to sacrifice some of the Shakespeare text for pageantry and graphic effects. The guests at the feast where Banquo's ghost appears are seated on one side of a long refectory table resembling the one in Da Vinci's The Last Supper, thus carrying resonances of sacrilege...

...particularly festive night in the 288-room Sheraton Hotel in the hills behind San Salvador. The hotel's new roller disco was crammed with teenagers, many of them students from U.S. schools home for the holidays. In the Izalco Supper Club, older couples danced to an eleven-piece orchestra. Across the hallway, in the Salon Centre America dining room, three men chatted earnestly over coffee. Without warning, two well-dressed men stepped into the nearly deserted restaurant, pulled out automatic pistols and sprayed the three diners with 9-mm and .45-cal. gunfire, hitting them in the chests...

Rudofsky has titled his show, and also his new Anchor Press/Doubleday book, Now I Lay Me Down to Eat, which turns out to be a reference to the Last Supper. Leonardo, it seems, had it wrong. Thirty-three smaller tremors followed during the night, ranging in intensity from 3.5 to 4.5 (see SCIENCE). From its epicenter at Eboli, near Salerno, the terremoto radiated its destruction through the regions of Campania and Basilicata, a rugged belt of parsimonious countryside between the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea on the ankle of the Italian boot. Though it struck the major cities in its path...
