...member of that "proud service" which Dean Glimp has referred to, I should like to commend the faculty for its decision, somewhat belated, to abandon University support for ROTC military programs. Many of my generation committed ourselves in the first years of the Kennedy Administation when U.S. foreign policy at least appeared more sensible and restrained than it subsequently turned out to be. We felt the same "responsibility" that some older members of the faculty and some younger ROTC aspirants have given eloquent testimony to. But the appeal to that "responsibility," independent of the circumstances in which it is presumably...

...tactic of taking action on its own, leaving the mass of students to puzzle out for itself the rationale behind SDS's moves. It is true, as SDS has found in the last week, that the vast majority of students will not itself actually take any action in support of the demands (not even as minimal a one as joining a picket line). The only people SDS can rely on to do anything are the 400 or so who make up the radical hard core. But it is wrong to thing, because of this, that the continuing effort to gain...

When SDS commands extensive latent support in the student body it is enabled to take successful militant action. In fact the more latent support exists the less militant the action need be. On the other hand, to take militant action in a context of latent non-support (shading into latent hostility) is clearly foolish. Thus, until a determined effort has been made to correct the misconception on the part of most students that the Faculty is near meeting the student demands, it would seem to be a mistake for SDS to make any seriously disruptive moves. Otherwise, lacking mass support...

...metaphor is something that we revere at Harvard. (In fact, Harvard is a metaphor for Harvard.) Thomas Schelling, the game theory professor, was able to convince a large number of faculty members to support his amendment to the Bruner motion on ROTC by comparing ROTC with the Anglican Church. Think of ROTC as the Anglican Church, he said. Now, even if we realized that the Anglican Church is teaching ministers here and that is something we think is wrong for a university to allow, we would not want to boot the Church off the campus so promptly and meanly...

...April 7 communique is unacceptable. The proposed format does nothing but add independent studies to the already-existing majors at this university. Further, the communique presupposes tat Afro-American Studies is less than a legitimate and valid intellectual endeavor. We reject this notion; Afro-American Studies needs no support from so-called "allied" fields...
