...sure, the biggest street demonstrations since the overthrow of the shah in 1979 were a dramatic wake-up call to the conservative clergy who are Iran?s self-appointed supreme rulers, despite parliamentary and presidential elections that allow the population a limited outlet for their own views. The frustrations of a generation raised under the Islamic revolution poured out in unprecedented six days of confrontations with authority, in which students dared challenge the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini. But the reformers? strong suit is not street battles; it?s elections. Next March, Iranians go to the polls to elect...

...people, and that was one reason Jack Kennedy gleamed so in his chosen field. Youth, wealth and that Kennedy brio helped, no doubt, but in this nation, which always loved its movie stars more than its leaders, dashing good looks, a beautiful wife and an untimely death make a sure ticket to immortality. John Kennedy Jr. was not in politics (though remarkably, everyone now seems to remember him as headed that way). Just as well, perhaps ? we don?t much like our politicians these days, and private-sector John-John (our name for him) was his father brought nearer...

Reportedly, it was Kennedy Schlossberg who made sure that Friday's memorial service was small and private, at an upper Manhattan church that their mother attended, instead of in a large cathedral where the world could freely gawk. And one saw her fingerprints on the decision to cremate John and his two fellow passengers and spread their ashes to the waves in a U.S. Navy "commitment at sea." (As son of the captain of PT 109 ?- and the commander-in-chief ?- John was certainly entitled; the courtesy was extended to include his wife and her sister.) To the accompaniment...

...Hastert has a numbers problem. CNN reports that eight to 10 GOPers are still in the "hell no" category when it comes to the big tax cut ? plenty enough to sink the bill when the 211 Democrats and one independent are a sure thing to stick together. Mostly moderates, led by Michael Castle of Delaware, the GOP rebels have a $514 billion cut in mind ?- more in line with what?s moving through the Senate these days (with bipartisan support), and a lot closer to what Bill Clinton might actually consider signing. But House GOP bigwigs like tax hawk Bill...

Whatever went wrong, it was more than Kennedy could handle. New radar data released Monday showed that the plane dropped toward the water at 4,700 feet a minute ? 10 times faster than the normal rate of descent. Investigators aren?t sure what that says about the cause of the crash, other than that the problem was severe, and the plane was out of control. To TIME aviation correspondent Jerry Hannifin, that final plummet is a sign that the pilot simply took on more than he was qualified for. "Anyone who has flown regularly on the East Coast in summer...
