...little of the excitement of a "Battle of Yavin" from the original film or the track titled "Return of the Jedi" from that film's soundtrack. There is something that sounds suspiciously similar to "The Emperor's Theme" from Return of the Jedi, but I can't be entirely sure. Of course, the familiar Obi-Wan Kenobi/The Force theme is present from time to time; but they are mere gestures that haunt the soundtrack, which actually turns out being far more reminiscent of the music from the Indiana Jones films than anything from the previous Star Wars films...
...their titular hero, a disconnected observer who feels more than he lets on. And in the delicate construction here, the band proves the same is true of itself. Messner aches with lush compositions that expand both BFF's sound (string arrangements accompany their trademark piano/bass/drum combination) and their identity. Sure, "punk rock for sissies" was a fun label for their often-silly post-kitsch nods to pissed-off ex-boyfriends and love-struck goofballs, but it hardly accommodates the stylish, lingering sway delivered here. The grandiose sweep of "Narcolepsy" leads into a series of cool, ruminative ballads echoing the mellow...
...know. I'm not necessarily sure what the hype is, whether it concerns the grand scope of the film, the plot, the performances or what. It seems like the buzz on this one has presupposed a buzz--people just assume they're supposed to assume something. Meanwhile, the filmmakers have never made any indication that the latest installment in the Star Wars series is anything but an attempt to relive the exhilarating escapism of the first three films. But somehow, that label has been translated into "grand cinematic event." Guess again...
...perfect sonic recreations of the album, filled out with the intensity of Martsch flailing at his guitar before your eyes.
