...will be recorded in comix history as the year of great anthologies. While graphic novels may get the attention, anthologies remain the premier way to discover new talent. This year saw a surfeit of excellently edited collections. Drawn and Quarterly and Fantagraphics both began publishing a series dedicated to showcasing new talent with "Drawn and Quarterly Showcase" and "Blood Orange," respectively. In August Alternative Comics published a follow up to its outstanding 2003 anthology, "Rosetta." Best of all, "McSweeny's #13," arguably the finest comix anthology ever published, set a new standard for the form (see TIME.comix review...
...uswa), which made major contract concessions to Ross to help get the business underway. So far, uswa seems to view Mittal's move as positive. Says union president Leo Gerrard: "Larger, stronger steel companies benefit our members and retirees." And outside analysts see a good fit between Mittal's surfeit of raw materials and ISG's demand for them. Raju Daswani, head of research at industry analysis firm Metal Bulletin Research, says: "Mittal [has] a lot of raw material production, but not much exposure to the high-end value of the chain. ISG needs a supplier of raw materials...
...apparently, and it's ironic since this is also the network that gave us "Forever Eden," "The Littlest Groom," and other shows that would give a surfeit of pleasure to the stupid, if only they could find them. In total, it announced 17 new shows, not counting one - the animated sitcom "Family Guy" - which the network canceled twice before and has un-canceled again. (New episodes return in summer 2005.) But Blair’s memoir, though doomed from the start, is a surfeit of fascinating concepts and compelling narrative which displays the talent that once served him so well at The Times.
