...Paris last week a deaf old professor with a long beard was buying newspapers, searching them anxiously for news from Germany. He was Leon Charles Albert Calmette, 68, who with Veterinary Surgeon Alphonse Guerin developed Bacillus Calmette-Guerin, commonly called BCG vaccine, for tuberculosis immunity (TIME, Aug. 4, 1930 et ante). Year and a half ago 76 infants in Lübeck died after administration of BCG. Last week three Lübeck doctors and a nurse were on trial for manslaughter and criminal negligence. ...intricate machines for examining the health of living hearts and blood vessels were on exhibit at the New York Academy of Medicine last week. Twenty-two authorities and 150 clinicians were present to lecture on curious aspects of heart disease. President John Augustus Hartwell of the Academy, a great surgeon, introduced them. Dr. Emanuel Libman, a great internist whom they will honor with a "homage book" next year, gave them his encouragement. It was a happy evening for Dr. Squier. That afternoon the College had elected him its next president. He is just about as much smaller in height and build than President Kanavel, as President Kanavel is smaller than retired President Miller...
Upshot of the surgeon-journalist conference on cancer was that the surgeons would find a writer who knows medicine or (more difficult) a doctor who knows journalism to bombard the public with cancer warnings...
