...course, in the realm of the sweetly surreal, especially since Jarmusch's film, despite all its here-and-now actors, is shot in the kind of murky black-and-white that one associates with '50s B pictures. It feels as if it has been recovered from a time capsule, and what larger meaning it may have is anyone's guess. Smith is very good on the West Wing--style internal politics of Kennedy's West Wing, but otherwise there is nothing particularly revelatory or shocking here. And there's something a little surreal about the book's lack of perspective. Kennedy was a President who confronted the unthinkable in many forms, be it nuclear annihilation or Oleg Cassini dancing the twist with Robert McNamara.
