Leonard Maltin's review of this film tagged it a "sure bet to become [a] cult item over the years." The surreal disconnection of its random events does give the movie a flavor similar to cult director David Lynch's work (presumably why it has been billed with his "Eraserhead"). But Polanski, both as actor and director, lacks the energy and abandon that have made Lynch's films so successful. Instead of being exhilarating, Trokovsky's illogical behaviour is simply frustrating. For those obsessed with the surreal The Tenantwill be an intruguing period piece. For the rest...
After the show, the band stayed around and talked with the audience for over an hour. It seemed almost surreal, after such an intense experience, to see the three of them hanging out with the crowd. Fifteen Minutes, however, was lucky enough to get Bela by himself, one-on-one, for about an hour before his soundcheck...
...esque brick courtyard with painted metal benches and coffee tables. Don't miss the interesting blue and red semi-circle sculpture jutting out of the covered parking lot. The children's center has extensive playground equipment. We would recommend visiting Peabody Terrace at night. Incandescent lampposts contribute to a surreal effect, and at night, you can use the playground without having to worry about pushing little children off the swings...
There was also Surrealism, which for many Catholic kids with artistic ambitions was the door out of orthodoxy. Kelley's work is larded with references to early eccentrics from the Surrealist pantheon, like the suicidal dandy Jacques Vache and the writers Raymond Roussel and the Comte de Lautreamont. On the other hand, his drawing is almost entirely derived from comic strips. Both confessional and obscure (why else would the museum have served up no fewer than 17 catalog essays to explicate it?), his work can nevertheless pack a flailing, provincial-surreal wallop -- now and then...
...rumors of Federico Fellini's death must have been exaggerated. Surely the wildly contradictory results of last week's municipal elections were the surreal creation of Italy's most imaginative film director. Disgusted with 40 years of corrupt governments dominated by centrist parties, voters opted for the extremes -- recycled communists, neofascists, northern separatists -- signaling the end of one era while giving no clue to the direction of the new one. The defeat of the mainstream parties seems likely to be repeated when Italians elect a new national Parliament next year. Wrote Eugenio Scalfari, editor of the Rome daily La Repubblica...
