Much credit for that World-Herald prosperity falls to Henry Doorly, who migrated from Barbados to Nebraska as a Union Pacific surveyor, married Margaret Hitchcock in 1903. As a reporter, Mr. Doorly kept his job only because he was the publisher's daughter's fiance, but he struck his stride as a want-ad salesman, quickly became advertising and then business manager. In nine years the paper was in the black and since 1912 has made money every year, multiplying enemies but losing no ground when it deserted staunch Senator Hitchcock's time-honored Democratic partisanship...
...Artist Bouché, "are three deer and they are just grazing and standing around. I just painted them because they are so sweet." The right and left panels, which must stand alone since the central section will often be covered by a cinema screen, show an Indian and a surveyor gazing at the landscape and cowboys rounding up buffalo...
Iron Ground. In 1844 a surveyor named William A. Burt, plagued by a dipping compass needle, discovered outcroppings of iron ore on Michigan's upper peninsula near Lake Superior. During the next few years prospectors filtered in among the Indians and trappers, word filtered out to Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo of the 30-mile Marquette iron range. Burt returned from a trip to England in a windjammer to see how well its navigator maintained his course, was thus spurred to invent an equatorial sextant. One of two members of Michigan's early Territorial Legislative Council...
...June, are most interesting when he neglects his theme and describes his relationship with his rivals. Born May 29, 1874, into an honest and respectable middle-class family, Chesterton lived long enough to admire even the hypocrisies of his Victorian household. His father was a real estate agent and surveyor, an ironic individual who reminded his son of a character by Dickens. One of the elder Chesterton's idiosyncrasies was to pretend that he knew a great deal about flowers, gravely lecturing to lady visitors about a "sprig of wild bigamy." When he identified a flower as "Bishop...
