...Obama should not stop there. The memos justify abusive interrogations by the completely discredited "ticking time-bomb" defense - that if we don't torture a suspect when we know there is an imminent threat, we stand to lose many, many American lives. But what ticking bomb? In one memo it states that it was thanks to waterboarding 9/11's mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (who was, according to the memo, subjected to the procedure 183 times) that we learned about a "Second Wave" of attacks. There has been little heard since about the "Second Wave," so without more documents declassified...

...agency to take a much needed honest look at its reporting on al-Qaeda. One memo notes that in 2004 the CIA obtained half of its reporting on this organization from detainees, many of whom "confessed" under abusive interrogation. A complete investigation into the quality of that information, I suspect, will prove we are going through this national trauma and international humiliation for absolutely nothing. There are sympathizers in practically every village," says Doukaev, who nevertheless concedes that fighting has dwindled...

Monitoring and combating any of these misdeeds is next to impossible - Somalia's current government can barely find its feet in the wake of the 2006 U.S.-backed Ethiopian invasion. And many Somalis, along with outside observers, suspect local officials in Mogadishu and in ports in semi-autonomous Puntland further north of accepting bribes from foreign fishermen as well as from pirate elders. U.N. monitors in 2005 and 2006 suggested an embargo on fish taken from Somali waters, but their proposals were shot down by members of the Security Council. (See photos of dramatic pirate rescues...

...proceedings began with a surprise application by defense attorney Abbas Kazmi, appointed the previous day. After conferring for about five minutes with his client, Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab, the only surviving suspect in the attacks, Kazmi told the judge, M.L. Tahiliani, that Qasab claims to be a minor and requests that his case be heard in juvenile court. The courtroom, filled with reporters and police officials, was stunned. Would this trial be suspended before it even began? (Read about the opening day in court...
