...furious Dos Santos, who was woken by the raid, said the soldiers apologized, and offered him $100 to buy some candy for his children. "I'm still traumatized," he says. "They cannot just enter a house at night unless they see the suspect run in." He warns that if such raids continue "in breach of human rights, they will lose the support of the people." The clumsy offer of compensation did little to ease his anger. "I did not accept the money," he says...

...elaborate hoax in the movie The Sting. They had us convinced that their nominating process was some version of the Salem witch trials, testing the candidates for any sign of heresy and hanging or drowning the ones who flunked. Then they choose the very guy many Republicans most suspect of being a witch. If you doubt that the whole thing was staged, just consider who the runner-up was. How could a party truly dedicated to self-destruction through ideological purity end up with the choice of McCain or Romney...

"They talk about Imad Mughniyah, but what did he do?" a Hizballah fighter once grumbled to me. "They suspect him of kidnapping American journalists, blowing up the French paratroops and the U.S. embassy. But things we did in the south [fighting Israeli troops] were militarily worth a hundred times more than what they claim Mughniyah did. Kidnapping is the easiest thing in the world. The CIA is crazy...
