...morality was built on a sincere belief in leading a virtuous life, serving the country he loved and hoping to achieve salvation through good works. That led him to make the link between private virtue and civic virtue and to suspect, based on the meager evidence he could muster about God's will, that these earthly virtues were linked to heavenly ones as well. As he put it in the motto for the library he founded, "To pour forth benefits for the common good is divine...
Maybe O'Connor really believes in this diversity notion. But here's what I suspect she and other affirmative-action proponents really think: nearly 27% of the population is black or Hispanic, but few of these minorities are in the upper ranks of most fields, in part because of past discrimination or current inequalities. And they think that the leadership class of our society should look like the rest of it. It's a laudable goal, and it's why I remain at least a tepid supporter of affirmative action. But let's stop using this notion of diversity...
...political implications of all this are, I suspect, good for both the Republic and George W. Bush. The Republic is always strengthened by a reassertion of sanity. These opinions were written by conservatives appointed to the court by Ronald Reagan. The words they used were striking. Sandra Day O'Connor said diversity is "essential to the dream of one nation" and to the "legitimacy" of our leadership class. Media Blackout ALGERIA The government banned press coverage of the release of two Islamic leaders and, in an attempt to impose a media blackout, ordered foreign journalists to leave the country. Freed are Abassi Madani, leader of the now banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), and his second-in-command, Ali Belhadj, who were given 12-year sentences in 1992. Mosque Murders PAKISTAN The army took control of the southwestern city of Quetta...
...workplace by October 2006. In line with an E.U. directive, it will outlaw mandatory retirement ages, end ageist job advertising, and allow Britons the choice of working until they are 70. The government claims the ban will effectively boost the number of skilled workers. But trade unions suspect a different motive. "People don't want to work longer," says Derek Simpson, general secretary of the Amicus union, "but the deepening pensions crisis means they don't have any choice." Under the new rules, dismissal on age grounds will only be permissible if the employer can show just cause. Employers' groups...
