...spies, who served communist ideology out of some sort of (misplaced) idealism. It was rather the opposite with him. Slowly, it steals across you that he was acting out of the desire to prove just how smart he was, how superior he was to his, well, superiors. Does he suspect them of suspecting him? The movie doesn't say, but one rather thinks that, in his arrogance, he did not. It doesn't toy with the possibility that he may have wanted to be caught, either. But it would have been logical. Where's the fun in running circles around...

...NATO In Light of the Global Threat of Terrorism, Walter Isaacson asked, "What would George Marshall and Dean Acheson be doing now?" [Feb. 5]. Isaacson suggested that they might be forging a Mideast Antiterrorism Organization (MATO) whose members would include Israel and Iraq. I doubt it. I rather suspect that Marshall and Acheson would be saying they told us so. Both men were vehemently opposed to the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine because they recognized that it was immoral and that it would open up a can of worms that would haunt the region...

...suspect that Obama's aim is to rebuild the bonfire of Howard Dean's grass-roots campaign, minus the scream. But raging infernos don't just happen. First comes courage. Dean never would have had his bonfire if he hadn't opposed the invasion of Iraq in clear, plain, inspiring English. Even then, Dean had trouble stoking the fire: the campaign was failing long before his fatal Iowa mating call. It had become a campaign cult, too enamored with itself, with too much blabber about the money being raised on the Web and not enough about issues other than Iraq...
