Here's my view: the auto cycle is nearing an end. SUV sales in the first half of the year were up 11.2%, vs. an increase of 18.4% in the first half of 1998, reports a research firm, Autodata. Whether out of genuine green-heartedness or just good p.r. instincts, Ford is putting its foot on the environmental accelerator.
