Demonstrating its versatility in last week's test, the SV-5D fired nitrogen jets in response to commands radioed from the ground, changing its attitude as it soared through space over the Pacific. Then, as it followed its trajectory back into the atmosphere, the craft moved its control flaps, turned, and detoured 500 miles before returning to its original course and splashing down in the ocean near Kwajalein Island. Though the SV-5D sank, and was lost when heavy seas ripped away its flotation gear, its otherwise successful flight brought closer the day when man can first steer...
Still more confusing are the crossovers between species. Millions of monkeys carry a virus which apparently does them no harm. But this virus, known as SV-40, may cause tumors if injected into hamsters. Viruses found in human tissues and in some rat cancers make hamsters bear deformed young with features resembling human mongolism. One virus that normally causes only grippe in man will cause cancer in hamsters...
...Both Merck & Co. virologists and Dr. Bernice Eddy of the National Institutes of Health, who reported similar results, had to go back to hamsters to start their cancers growing, but there was no doubt that they got their effects with a virus, known variously as the vacuolating agent and SV (for simian virus) 40. Trentin, who grew highly malignant tumors in hamsters injected with adenovirus 12, which hitherto had been known to cause disease (a feverish cold, or "grippe" ) only in humans. Doubters suggested that Dr. Trentin's adenovirus might have been contaminated with SV 40. To make sure, other laboratories will repeat the Baylor experiments...
