Somehow the authors get us to swallow this nonsense. Floyd and Birdwell team up, naturally, and become regional Robin Hoods. There isn't much to the story -- flivvers and floozies, irate wives and an occasional perforated lawman, plus a misty death scene for each of the heroes. The novel's true subject, to the lighthearted extent that it has one, is mythology itself. With the headline-hungry FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover promoting Floyd to No. 2 and then No. 1 on his new invention, the Most Wanted List, Charley's life becomes a legend before he is finished living...

...Mitchell and the mainstreamers fail to cut a deal, the Administration's fallback is to swallow hard and accept a package of piecemeal insurance reforms. Those would probably include requirements that workers could take their insurance with them when they change jobs and provisions that would forbid insurers to deny coverage for people with previously existing conditions. ...elaborate as to be hilarious. As with Kim Il Sung, who was said to have nearly supernatural powers and be in several places at the same time, Kim Jong Il's life is swaddled in layers of official fable worthy of a demigod. His birth was foretold by a swallow. A double rainbow appeared over sacred Mount Paektu when he was born. The mythographers have not claimed that he was suckled by a she- wolf and tutored by centaurs, but their hyperbole in other matters is nearly that far a reach. Jong Il supposedly has mastered all knowledge...
