...near-successes: on the Alcoa Hour, Thunder in Washington tried to pack into 60 minutes the entire story of a businessman in government, from his hopeful arrival, through his first miscues, to his humiliation before a Senate investigating committee. Author David Davidson struck boldly through the tangled swamp known as Conflict of Interest, but not even yeoman work by Melvyn Douglas and Ed Begley could make the main issues clear. Climax! starred Michael Rennie in Man of Taste, a melodrama about an art dealer who had a method for improving the price on his artists' paintings-he simply killed...
Goodbye to All That. The leading lady of the great tradition is expected to resemble the gyascutus. prock, tree squeak and swamp gaboon rolled into one. Bernhardt, it is said, would swirl onstage with "eyes that resembled holes burned into a sheet of paper"; her lines she sang in a melodious but somewhat fruity "voice of gold." Even allowing for the innovations in technique, I found Godot on evening of baggy-pants comedy and penny-dreadful philosophy with little power, wit, or charm...
...mysterious bunyip, the legendary beastie that lives at the bottom of the placid Australian billabong, is less strange to Australians than Herbert Vere Evatt. A shaggy intellectual who leaped zestfully from the High Court bench into the labor political swamp in 1940, Evatt was Minister of External Affairs in three successive Labor governments, was once (1948) president of the U.N. General Assembly, and was long a man expected by many to become Prime Minister. But Herbert Evatt's public popularity and political power have been shaking apart since Australia's Petrov spy case broke early last year, just...
...Crimson is slated to swamp Princeton in a triangular cross country meet with the Tigers and Yale, scheduled to begin at 3:45 this afternoon on the Franklin Park golf course. The Elis, however, rated on a par with the varsity, may just manage to capture the meet over a so far unbeaten Crimson squad...
