Florida's leaders believed that if they could just drain the swamp, they could turn a peninsular wasteland into a recreational, agricultural and residential paradise. They failed catastrophically. In 1928, a hurricane blasted Lake Okeechobee, killing some 2,000 pioneers that their promises had drawn to the Everglades...
...true, but why in the name of Youngstown would one ever say it? All that sort of talk does is invite Ohio voters to look elsewhere for an alternative to a candidate they are already a little uncertain about. To say nothing of Ohio Democrats, who did not exactly swamp Obama with votes in the March 4 primary (he won exactly 5 of the state's 88 counties.) I wonder how many days of clean-up visits those remarks added to Plouffe's plan to contest the Buckeye state - or whether his comments could prove to be a self-fulfilling...

Farewell to the mess tent, the only place in camp that refused to patronize. Farewell to the most recent additions to the cast. To Colonel Potter who saw the war as a Zane Grey western. To Charles Emerson Winchester III, Harvard?...
...Democratic win in November. Ward leaders like old Mike Stack of the 58th up in Somerton, where my parents moved us to, still boast of the fact that Jack Kennedy was elected by guys like them. Philadelphia gave Kennedy a 330,000-vote plurality in 1960, enough to swamp the rest of the state. Back then, Pennsylvania had as many electoral votes as California, a state Kennedy lost to native son Richard Nixon...
