Surls' huge wraiths posture and writhe on point with a sort of evilly humorous grace; they summon up nursery horrors, tree demons, swamp critters. They have some of the charged, crude intensity of New Mexican santos. Surls is a good craftsman who does not make a parade of technique. He lacks laconic effects - nothing too beautiful: storytelling rather than elocution. His preferred tools are the chain saw, the ax and the blowtorch, with which he "paints" areas of sooty...

...show's final big bonus is Don Meuse's extraordinarily varied and ornate scenery; the nine sets include the CocaBanana Nightclub, the Queen's ice palace (used for calisthenics), and the Little Swamp of Horrors, which sports a killer bush. Clever choreography around the curtain spares the audience the tiresome delays of scene changing--a blessing, since, when a show's whole stock in trade lies in being collegiate, even a little high-schoolishness can turn it sour...

...rocket-propelled grenades burst on the sandbags around the position without causing significant damage. But at about 10 p.m., a single 120-mm mortar round crashed through the roof, blowing up the bunker with the ten Marines inside.
