Back to the Bible. The new Israel strives obsessively for the forms and spirit of national unity. So far Israel's citizens have been unable to agree on a constitution, because the dominant Socialists refuse to accept rabbinical sway in the state. With only 20% of the population Orthodox, religion has not proved a cementing force. Because rabbis exercise absolute control over marriage and divorce laws, some Israelis have already found a Reno in Cyprus. Israel's state-owned trains do not run on the Sabbath, and the citizen who drives his private car through Orthodox districts...

Dulles' statement of Goa's relationship to Portugal was, of course, factually correct. Portugal has held sway in Goa for a long time. Goans are citizens of Portugal, etc. But what Mr. Dulles does not seem to realize is that the truth plainly stated does not constitute the whole of grace in diplomatic affairs. His specific reference to Goa as "a province" of Portugal may have been true, but it was not politic and not necessary...

To lead Spain out of its self-centered provincialism into fruitful communication with the rest of Europe, Ortega founded the most famous Spanish newspaper...

For a breed of Harvardmen will grow up, never having tasted that curious elixir--the blend of fall air, football, and good scotch. When the new alumnus gets slowly soused of a Saturday afternoon, he will care not one whit whether Crimson is in triumph flashing. As interested alumni gradually become extinct, the Harvard farm system will dwindle. Within a decade the Red Beast will again be no more than a small pink rodent...

Across the Mediterranean to troubled North Africa poured the greatest flow of reinforcements since the days when Rommel's Afrika Korps held sway. The French cruiser Montcalm landed a battalion of French infantrymen at Casablanca, and a steamer brought 400 more; nine battalions started moving to Algeria, following the six from Germany that had already arrived; transport aircraft brought naval commandos. Back in France, 100,000 conscripts had their period of service lengthened indefinitely; 50,000 reservists were recalled to the colors. All told, the rapid build-up brought French strength in colonial North Africa to some...
