Nobels for three Americans, a Japanese and a Swede...
Last week the 1981 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, worth about $182,000 each, went to five men, three Americans, a Swede and a Japanese, for helping open windows on that frenzied dance of the atoms. In their work, they used one of the more esoteric tools of 20th century science: quantum mechanics, a mathematical way of looking at the paradoxically dual nature of matter, whose smallest components sometimes behave like waves, sometimes like particles. But their results have everyday importance, for example, in the development of techniques for measuring pollution and the creation of new drugs and chemicals...
Neither player was at the top of his game, but Borg seemed particularly confused by McEnroe's forceful approach shots and crushing net attack. The Swede, who had won five consecutive Wimbledon titles until McEnroe took that championship from him this summer, failed to follow his serve to net and frequently passed up opportunities to attack during sharp backcourt exchanges...
...take the next two sets. Then, in the deciding set, both men lifted their games to the sublime. In the third game, Borg had four chances to break Connors' serve; each time Connors fought him off. The next game, Connors had two break points on Borg, and the Swede served two aces to win. Down 0-40 in the next game, Connors ripped off five straight points to win again. Borg finally prevailed, 6-4, and afterward declared the match "one of my greatest comebacks...
Anticipating Borg's demise, our intrepid interpreter commented, "The archangel is about to have his feathers plucked." Several games later, the Swede had recovered in Collins' opinion: "He stepped out of the electric chair for a moment." And even NBC's cutesy description for the Wimbledon finals experience -via-satellite took on new meaning as it spilled out of Collins' ever-active lips: "Breakfast at Wimbledon--be careful of the spoon at breakfast--don't hurt yourself...
