...Actually, it's hard to tell which if any of the critical faves will be popular, because most of the big winners (Diving Bell, No Country, Persepolis, Starting Out in the Evening, Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood) are November or December releases. Half of them haven't hit the commercial theaters yet. Maybe the critical establishment has A.D.D...

...effort to steer you away from the road of rash generalizations, I'd like to object to your preview of Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, in which you wondered how the film's "buckets of gore" and singing and dancing might attract or repel "fogies" and kids [Dec. 3]. I'm a 17-year-old theatergoer, and I don't think kids are looking to Sweeney Todd for Saw IV thrills. Besides, the R rating precludes the Disney audience. And have you checked out Broadway lately? I believe the "fogey" audience has become accustomed to situations that are more violent...

...Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, as the full title has it, has quite a history. It's the film version of the hit Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical, which was based on a '70s play based on a 19th century melodrama. All of those appear to have drawn on an urban myth about a barber who found an unconventional use for his straight razors and then an even more unconventional use for the bodies of his victims...
