Camaraderie is swell, but the play's the thing, and this year Humana had the goods. The big find was Naomi Wallace, a Kentucky native whose work has been produced by Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company but virtually not at all in the U.S. Her luxuriously poetic One Flea Spare is set during the London plague of 1665, when "at night the rats came out in twos and threes to drink the sweat from our faces." Zyuganov enjoys a considerable lead in the polls over President Yeltsin and the two other leading candidates, Grigori Yavlinsky and Vladimir Zhirinovsky. In his effort to build a coalition that could swell the ranks of communist voters to the more than 50% he needs to avoid a run-off in the presidential vote, Zyuganov has cut back on Marxist verbiage, and is making an effort to include all groups that could help him defeat Yeltsin. Its creators either think they're so smart they can distract us from whopping elisions in their story line--there's a lot of murky stylishness in the film's look--or believe we're so stupid that we won't notice them. But as those trailers about the movie theater's sound system keep reminding us, "The Audience is Listening." Watching...
