Osterhus still had some kick left in him by the end of the meet. He edged a Dartmouth swimmer to claim seventh place in the third-to-last event, the 500-freestyle, and for the last leg of the concluding 400-yard freestyle relay he hopped out of the pool and dove off the blocks to kick off his own anchor leg.
