...between numbers two and four. As the boats began to turn the bend at the middle of the course, Brown's crew was leading, with Page half a length behind. At this point Cheney forced Ogden, who had been keeping as close to the windward shore as possible, to swing out farther into the stream. The tide was running very strong, and number four was carried out of its course towards the opposite shore. The second boat felt the tide much less, and here took the lead. At the stake the two boats turned together. Page now began to draw...
...also till the winter is over, it ought to be done now. With three new men as strong and enduring as the present three, with adequate coaching, and two or three more strokes to the minute, with more throwing the head on, and omitting none of this year's swing and dash, and in a paper boat if it is really faster than a wooden one, there is no reason why Harvard, if she will let no rival outwork her this winter, should not again be in the first three, and this time at the end of the three which...

Weld and Holyoke both had better individual polish than the Holworthy crew, but they lacked that certain and firm catch together, which is only the result of long pulls by the same crew, behind the same steady stroke...
...Holworthy were seen to turn the stake first, soon followed by Matthews, then by Weld, and were not off before the broadside of Holyoke began to swing around...
