Roaring in unexpectedly from the Gulf of Mexico, a swirl of tornadoes cut across central Florida last week, killing ten persons, injuring 300 and causing $30 million worth of damage. Weather Bureau meteorologists were as surprised as the victims. They had predicted storms confidently enough, but their maps showed no sign of the ominous low pressure areas that usually accompany tornadoes. An official warning was not issued until half an hour after the first twister hit the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, a delay that was a devastating reminder of how little is known about the monstrous forces that produce...
...swirl of controversy has largely obscured the mayor's positive achievements, among them excellent appointments to sensitive agencies, notably those responsible for narcotics, welfare, buildings and parks. Though Lindsay's vaunted equanimity has also suffered, he recovered his good humor long enough to supply a surprise postscript to the annual musical lampoon staged by political reporters. Always a show business buff, Lindsay donned straw hat, white gloves and cane for a soft-shoe song-and-dance routine with a professional partner. "Maybe," he quipped, "I can save this show yet." That hopeful observation was clearly not limited...
...only now beginning to swing. So far, Acapulco vacationers have included Lynda Bird Johnson (relaxing), Anne Ford (honeymooning) and ex-Mayor Wagner (recuperating). Last week the chic league was further congested by Italian Designer Emilio Pucci, who arrived bringing the season's first rainstorm and leading a glossy swirl of journalists and society's beautiful people-Mary Cushing, Caterine Milinaire, Aurora Hitchcock-on a swinging junket to celebrate his new perfume, Vivara. All of this, on top of a regular tourist season that will probably see 1,560,000 visitors stream in and out of a resort town...
Movement casued by the earth's rotation is so slight that even the smallest countermovement can overwhelm it: in the ordinary bathtub, water will swirl out either way-usually in the same direction it was swirled in. Even if allowed to sit enough to stop the force of its inward swirl, the water's natural rotational movement will often be overcome by air currents, uneven heating, surface tension or irregularities in the shape of its container...
Three years ago, Professor Ascher H. Shapiro, head of the Department of Mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, finally proved the counterclockwise movement for the Northern Hemisphere by constructing a perfectly symmetrical tub filling it with with a clockwise swirl, then letting it sit for 24 hours in still air. After that, he carefully pulled the plug and filmed the results. Using Shapiro's technique, five persistent investigators at the University of Sydney have now duplicated his experiment, demonstrating that Down Under water will drain clockwise. To be sure they report in the magazine Nature, they cannot...
