...between there are many thresholds of transition, where the changes of size alter the whole relationship, within the image, of photography (the source) to painting (the product). Sometimes, more recently, Close seems to abandon the grid altogether, transforming his standard face of Philip Glass into an almost rococo swirl of repeated fingerprints impressed on the canvas from an ink pad: a literal parody, if ever there was one, of the "sense of touch" in traditional painting. But always he seems to be after a kind of minimalist nirvana where, as he puts it, "every square inch was physically the same...

During the transition period, Allen was given high marks for smoothly handling the swirl of diverse viewpoints and personalities. Since the Inauguration, complaints have risen again. Some White House colleagues feel he has not assembled his NSC staff swiftly or skillfully enough. Like his patron Meese, he seems to lack an eye for detail. Allen's ego may be smaller than Haig's, but not by much. Ambitious and restless, he may eventually claim more of the deck than he does at present, but he will probably move too adroitly to inspire mutiny...

Forced to consider the complexity of Oppenheimer and the various political and moral forces that swirl within and around him, the audience can't help but be drawn into the personal drama of Oppenheimer's life. An observer can almost feel the urgency of Oppenheimer's quest, especially since Else cleverly intersperses clips of the Nazi war machine to underscore the importance of completing the work on the bomb. All the American scientists were convinced that Nazi Germany was working on an atomic bomb of its own: the long days at Los Alamos...

With lots of blusher but no shame, the peacock profession of modeling gives face and body to our covetous dreams, then mocks us as we press our noses against the window glass. What unimaginable delight made the pretty lady swirl and smile as the photographer snapped her picture? What season of debauchery brought the sulky thrust to this beauty's lower lip? At what groveling serf does the fine young lord in the Ferrari scowl with such contempt? Nothing; none; at no one; these glossy apparitions are as hollow as soap bubbles. The photographer has frozen moments that never were...
