Whatever government is chosen, no one expects it to last very long. Denmark, in short, last week came as close to a revolution as that peaceful, cautious nation has been since Hamlet put the sword to Claudius at Elsinore...
...peasant societies. They believed that the proper innoculation was rapid economic growth. This was the theory behind the Alliance for Progress--the United States would still intervene militarily when it saw its interests threatened--Cuba, 1961, Dominican Republic, 1965--but armed force was only one of a two-edged sword. Choreographer Cassie Freeland's imaginative staging blends well with Berlin's direction, especially the more subtle examples of pantomime (which, again, is all too often obscured from the majority of the audience). Each tune he sculpts a male image, he counters it by making something female, like a small piece that started...
Sharp-edged as a sword, erect as a phallus, spare as a symbol, the sculptures of Japan's Masayuki Nagare make even the generous dimensions of Manhattan's Staempfli Gallery seem cramped. They soar through the ceiling, project invisible backdrops of misted mountains against an opaline sea. Within themselves, around themselves, they create their own space. At the age of 50, Nagare has become clearly one of the world's major sculptors...
