...practice of banking hard money outside is an old one, and the Spanish government had tended to wink at the practice. Businessmen swore that they could not operate without external balances, and even some government agencies had undeclared accounts of their own. But Spain's sick economy has been going from bad to worse. In the first nine months of 1958 the country suffered a trade deficit of $263 million. Its exports of citrus fruits are down more than 60%. It has so little left in gold reserves ($57 million) that it cannot even scrape up enough money...
...took up contract bridge with wild and alarming enthusiasm. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, newspapers reported bridge divorces, bridge assault-and-battery cases, even bridge deaths. Cartoonist H. T. Webster recorded bridge players' foibles in a long and memorable series. A North Carolina addict swore to shoot the next man who dealt him a bad hand, dealt himself a bust-and promptly shot himself to death. In Kansas City, Mo. in 1929, Housewife Myrtle Bennett committed one of the decade's most headlined homicides by shooting her husband after a bitter quarrel about a bridge deal...
Cooper's fist clinched around his ultimate weapon: a battered copy of the Southern Manifesto. But at vote-counting time in the as-good-as-elected Democratic primary late last week, Albert...

By 1841 the mock Latin for "will not come out of the swamp" was widely accepted backwoods legal terminology for "unavailable." An Illinois tavern keeper posted notice of a delinquent barfly who disappeared without paying his tab: "Non est inventus ad libitum scape goatum non comeatibus in swampo. Ergo, non catchibus, non prosecutibus, non tryabus, non chastisibus...
Last week Bernard Goldfine swore that Cotton had not represented him as a lawyer since going to Congress in 1947. Yet, in at least one instance, Norris Cotton still does represent Goldfine. The instance is that of the Rogers Hotel in Lebanon. Goldfine is the real owner of the Rogers. In 1943, Cotton negotiated the purchase of the hotel as a front for Client Goldfine, oversaw the title search and made the option payment from his personal bank account. Goldfine repaid Cotton for the option, but it was still necessary for Cotton to take final title to the hotel...
