...first time, Monica Lewinsky's attorney has admitted his client was alone in the Oval Office with President Clinton a number of times. Of course, being alone doesn't mean any "salacious event" occurred, according to William Ginsburg. But it may contradict Clinton's alleged sworn testimony in the Paula Jones case that he and Lewinsky were never alone. If the former intern is prepared to repeat this whenever she gets in front of the grand jury, immunity or no immunity, Ken Starr will be a happy...
...Into this atmosphere comes another emotionally charged question: Should the Secret Service be forced to testify against the man they are sworn to protect? Starr has subpoenaed one retired and one current member of the President?s bodyguard, one day after former agent Lewis Fox claimed to have seen Clinton and Lewinsky in the Oval Office together. Janet Reno confirmed that subpoenas have been issued, but said the Administration hadn't decided whether to fight them. It?s certainly no secret that the Treasury Department (which is in charge of the Secret Service) dislikes attacks on its agents? historical reticence...
...that time, however, she had come into Ken Starr's sights. The very day she filed the paper, his FBI agents swooped in on a lunch with Tripp and escorted her upstairs to talk about the future. The Office of the Special Prosecutor is, in effect, asking for all of the Jones team's research into other women alleged to have been involved with the President...
Lewinsky has reportedly denied the affair in a sworn affidavit given to Starr, which he is now using as a lever. If he is able to "flip" her by threatening to bring criminal charges against her, it would set up a "he said, she said" standoff, with an uncertain outcome. But if she sticks to her denial--and says any claims of an affair on Tripp's tapes were just talk--Starr might have a difficult time. Of course, any tapes of Clinton leaving a message on Lewinsky's answering machine, if they exist, might help Starr. He could also...
