...like this abound in the script, making it difficult for us to appreciate Schroeder's solid direction of a highly competent cast. Rourke has genuine negative charisma in this film, in contrast to his vapid, one dimensional sex magnet persona in 9 1/2 Weeks. Here he's a sex symbol straight out of the Cuisinart, with his bloodstained tee shirts and battered face, and he remains likeable through the corniest moments. For all his apocalyptic late night poetry scribbling and implausible literary references, we can understand why Wanda and Tully fall in love with him, and even come to blows...

During Elmer's tenure as the Castle's janitor, which ended with his death in 1977, the Lampoon promoted him to such exalted positions as Grand Culinator, Generalissimo and Prevailing Symbol of the Lampoon. The Lampoon's award to visiting comedians is named the "Elmer" in his honor...

Every presidential election is shaped by a handful of events that resonate with the electorate. Last week's wild-on-the-Street gyrations of the stock market are likely to become just such a political symbol, playing on voter fears that the economy has been held aloft by illusion. As Democratic Pollster Geoffrey Garin puts it, "We've seen over and over again in focus groups that people have had a sense of huge bills coming due, with no one knowing how to pay them." ...breakfast eaters, but it wound up appalling some of them instead. A new package for General Mills' Count Chocula breakfast cereal features a rendering of Bela Lugosi from the 1931 film Dracula. Around the vampire's neck hangs a pendant that resembles a six-pointed Star of David, the symbol of Judaism. When the boxes first appeared in stores last month, offended shoppers complained to the Minneapolis-based company. After the Cleveland Jewish News (circ. 15,000) picked up the story, General Mills agreed to change the box cover to a design without the pendant. The offending package had gone...

Because of its complexity and rarity, Revelation was the big attraction. Partch's own libretto alternates between two analogous fleshly rites: the orgiastic reception by female fans accorded to Dion (Obba Babatunde), a Presley symbol, and the lustful revels of the mythic Bacchae in praise of their priapic god, Dionysus. Each principal singer takes two roles. Mom (Suzanne Costallos) falls under the Pelvis' spell, just as her ancient Greek counterpart, Agave, is seduced by Dionysus. When Sonny (Christopher Durham) attempts to intervene, he is, in his alter ego of Pentheus, torn apart by the horde of crazed women...
