Friedkin argues that "you can't be held responsible for the things people do in response to films," most notably in response to "The Exorcist." He says that "violence on TV and in movies is a symptom of what's happened in society, not a stimulus" to violent action. "People are immune to it," he says "They take for granted a lot of death and tragedy." Despite disavowing accountability, Friedkin admits that it made him feel "terrible" to hear of the powerful, negative effect his films can have...

Perhaps the most successful awareness campaign has been conducted by the Lyme Borreliosis Foundation. In 1988 Lyme disease was scarcely known even in the area around Lyme, Connecticut. Karen Forschner, who had the Lyme-disease symptom of a bull's-eye rash during pregnancy, started the foundation with her husband Tom shortly after the birth of their only child, a son who was finally diagnosed with the disease. The world's economy didn't grow at all last year, and is expected to expand only 1.1% this year. The currency crisis that swept Europe last week was a profound symptom of the West's stagnation. Germany's relatively high interest rates, run up by the cost of rapid unification, have prevented its major trading partners -- including to some extent the U.S. -- from lowering their own rates enough to boost their economies...

...long ago that brain injuries can be a powerful tool for investigating how human thought and memory are organized. A case study by two Johns Hopkins researchers, reported in Nature, is but the latest example. A 70-year-old retired librarian who suffered such an injury developed a remarkable symptom: she lost the ability to name animals, though % she could still name other living things, such as plants, and inanimate objects. Nor could she assign physical attributes to animals -- she could not, for example, answer the question "What color is an elephant?" Yet she could answer nonphysical questions, about whether...
