...revealing glimpses of the subatomic world by their reactions with atomic nuclei. SLAC has also been designed for the eventual addition of another 715 klystrons, which would increase its energy level to 40 BEV, exceeding even the output of Brookhaven National Laboratory's 33 BEV proton-accelerating synchrotron, currently the world's most powerful accelerator...
This was just what Columbia's Dr. Paolo Franzini had in mind when he went to work with Brookhaven's synchrotron in January 1965. Along with his wife, Dr. Juliet Lee-Franzini, Drs. Charles Baltay and Lawrence Kirsch, he fired particles called pi mesons into a bubble chamber filled with liquid deuterium. About one-thirtieth of the times that a pi meson hit a deuterium nucleus, out came the eta meson, which decays into three pions. The pions streaked through the bubble chamber, the positive leaving a line that curved to the right, the negative peeling...
...detect the existence of the anti-deuteron, Dr. Leon M. Lederman and his group worked with a device called a mass spectrometer at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. Using Brookhaven's 33 billion electron volt synchrotron, they bombarded a target of beryllium with a beam of high-energy protons. This resulted in a debris of. particles that sped through the 300-ft. magnetic field of the spectrometer, where they could be sorted and analyzed. When 16 giant, 20-ton magnets were set to pass positively charged particles, the apparatus made careful readings of the flight path, momentum...
Omega-Minus Signature. The unknown particle predicted by the eightfold way was named omega minus, and both CERN Laboratory in Geneva and Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island started elaborate campaigns to find it. Brookhaven's apparatus was built around the 33-bev (billion electron volt) Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, and it used a line of magnets and electrostatic separators 400 ft. long to isolate negative K-mesons. Ten of the K-mesons were allowed to enter Brookhaven's 80-in. liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber every 2½ seconds, and pictures were taken of the results. Two pictures...
...continuum bursts themselves are caused by a process known as synchrotron radiation: when electrons traveling at speeds near that of light are accelerated they emit a broad-band radiation. Any modern theory concerning solar flares must somehow explain where these high-speed electrons come from and how they are accelerated in order to explain Type IV radio emission...
