...major flaw in this otherwise gorgeous performance was the orchestra, whose members were generally out of sync; their playing lacked the passion and conviction of the actors, and the lively score could have benefitted from more musical contrast. The brass section in particular seemed adept at blasting out the wrong notes altogether. Fortunately, the top-notch singing was often dazzling enough to make the orchestra sound more subdued by comparison...

...flaw is its set and production design. Although it is certainly cozy to be seated near the orchestra and to see all of the musicians, it eventually becomes distracting; the orchestra even drowns out the singing at some points. The stage itself is sparsely decorated: though not out of sync with the plain New England farmhouse of Wharton's novella, it still appears lacking. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that the stage is so small that the actors often have nowhere...

Hicks: Well, the competition has been held weekly for a few months now. First there is a drag show during which people can sign up for the amateur striptease. After the professionals finish their lip-sync routine, the hostess drag queen announces the seven to 10 audience members that will compete and calls them up one by one. (S) he puts on some thumpy music, usually fuzzy techno but it can be anything appropriate for hip shaking. The contestants begin to dance and disassemble their outfits. Afterwards the hostess dances an extravaganza finale...
