Israel is fighting a war deliberately provoked by Iran and Syria via terrorist organizations (Hizballah and Hamas) that aim to eliminate the sole legitimate democracy in that part of the world [July 31]. Instead of blaming Israel, Western democracies should stand up for it because they will be the next targets of terrorism. What have the U.N. and the West done to secure peace in the six years since Israel pulled out of Lebanon? Nothing, except allow Hizballah to build up its military. It is scandalous and hypocritical to demand that Israel forfeit its right to destroy Hizballah. PHILIPPE LUGINBUHL...
...Lebanon and northern Israel might have been avoided had the Bush Administration not given the cold shoulder to Iran and Syria. And the U.S. might have been able to wield some influence had it not been embroiled in a civil war in Iraq. We don't have to wait to learn what the legacy of the Bush Administration will be. We can see it now in all the blood being spilled and the destruction happening in Israel, Lebanon and Iraq. ERIK STOTTRUP Waupaca...

In no way can this murderous aggression be considered a "struggle." LARRY BIGIO Zichron Yaakov, Israel...

Indeed, France and the U.S. have long collaborated in their effort to shape a new, post-Syria order in Lebanon in which Hizballah is a non-military bit player, and the text of their proposed Security Council resolution reflects their common concerns. But as long as Hizballah and the Lebanese government continue to reject its terms, the resolution - even if approved - has little chance of ending the fighting...
...Israel's past troubles with the U.N. forces in Lebanon suggest the international mission could also be complicated by Israel's reacting directly to perceived threats by killing Hizballah leaders or bombing supply lines from Syria. Still, despite the limited optimism over its prospects, the Israelis and the Lebanese agree that it may be their only hope of achieving a cease-fire. Until, Sgt. Yoshua says he intends to keep updating the marks on the barrel of his tank's cannon with the number of Hizballah kills claimed by his platoon - 50 so far, he says. And somewhere across...
