...very likely that there will be no clubs next year to join. By the arrangements which have been made with Mr. Blakey, and on which the existence of the clubs now hangs, unless about eight more men join each club and pay their money this year, the club-system must be numbered among the things of the past. The evil of this state of things is apparent to all. If the clubs are discontinued no persons...

...expenses will be increased. It would be a pity if this comes to pass through the lack of a few extra members, and therefore we hope that all those interested in rowing who have not yet joined a club will do so at once, and help to keep the system in existence...

...Whether there will be spreads and dancing this year still remains to be seen; but we doubt not that hereafter there will be no public exercises, and that the day will be devoted entirely to social enjoyment. ...Union course. The expense of providing cups of much value as personal prizes for the members of the winning crews would be too great for the present financial condition of the clubs, since at present all the available funds are needed to buy the boats and to establish the system, as now improved, on a firm basis; and accordingly, the customary pewter trophies will probably be given. The two large cups, however, of which we give some account, confer a marked honor and glory, which renders them prizes more eagerly sought and more proudly held than cups, however valuable, awarded...
