When McGovern's speech was over, Humphrey and Muskie, Chisholm, Sanford and Jackson all clasped hands in a tableau of party unity; only Jackson looked, at first, dyspeptically suspicious. As McGovern knew, that array of unity could not conceal the deep fissures that divide the party. Actually, there are two Democratic parties now. One was in the convention hall, relishing its ascension to power. The other, beaten and bitter, was on the sidelines. It was not just Richard Daley, but included scores of Democratic Governors, Senators, Congressmen, state party chairmen, local officeholders?all the regulars unhorsed by the McGovern reforms...
...tableau seemed gruesomely familiar: the flags and fustian, the candidate prowing through crowds attended by hard-eyed men not quite in control, the people reaching out to touch him. Then, abruptly, the little black gun exploding like a birthday-party favor-pap pap pap pap pap in a smudge of gunsmoke. The candidate would capsize backward, the cameras would catch a wild, stricken frieze as his young wife knelt over him, staining her suit with his blood, and the bodyguards, an instant too late, would wrestle down some strange little drifter with a pistol welded to his hand...

The opening scene contrasts the quiet curves and calm glow...
...CURRENT PRODUCTION the ending is unfortunately obscured by the way in which lights have been substituted for the storm. Obviously meteorological effects are not easily duplicated in a small-scale production, but the stop-action tableau which poses Rubek and Irene facing each other tenderly while the lights flash and die is unnecessarily ambiguous. Their only possible reunion should be clear: cold death on the great heights...
...audience for feminist art is to attract people to see it, and Womanhouse performed that function. "People who don't go to art galleries feel comfortable about coming to a house, and a lot of them went away very moved," says Chicago. They were particularly struck by a tableau in which a real woman sat in a heavily perfumed bedroom, methodically applying and removing makeup, over and over again. Said one of the contributing artists: "Old ladies just stood here and wept while they watched...
